Pumice is a wonderful hardscaping material that is lightweight, porous, and helps to promote a healthy environment in your terrarium or aquarium. Due to its porous nature it holds water and releases humidity at a steady rate. When used for hardscaping a terrarium, it provides areas for some more delicate mosses, ferns, lycophytes, and orchids to grow while reducing the risk of overwatering. It also provides an interesting habitat element for your non-plant terrarium inhabitants.
This material also lends itself well to any aqua-scaping projects.
The sizes and shapes are quite variable (see photo with tape measure for some examples). You can easily break your rocks into smaller pieces with a hammer and rock chisel, to suit your specific needs.
One pound of pumice rock is roughly equivalent to the size of 2 adult fists. The picture included of the terrarium with a background measuring 24" x 22" used approximately 21 pounds for the coverage seen. You can also see an example of a pumice background terrarium that is well-established.
Preparation before use:
We recommend the following steps
1) soak fully submerged for 24-48 hours.
2) Bake in oven at ~350F for 45 minutes or boil for 10-15 minutes.
3) if siliconing to background, allow to fully dry prior to applying silicone.
